Chapter 6 – Correcting and Enhancing Digital Photographs

The first exercise of the chapter used Camera Raw to enhance a raw image. This was my first time working in Camera raw with a raw image. I will definitely be using this in the future with my own photographs i take so that i can change the lighting, tones and sharpness of my images myself whilst keeping the maximum quality from capture to print. The difference in the image shown above really goes to show how these changes made the image feel warmer and clearer.

The second exercise involved correcting common quality issues with photographs in Photoshop. I have done similar fixes such as removing red eye from my own photos but this took it one step further adjusting the shadows and highlights as well as reducing the noise of the image. I’m not too pleased with how the image turned out honestly but that’s how the exercise aims to make the image look. I think that the lighting on the woman and child seems unfitting to the background due to the flash and after continuing by adjusting the exposure of just them two in a simple selection i was better pleased with the results.

Exercise 3 introduced me to my new favorite filter, vanishing point. This made a task that I would have previously taken more time on really simple. Using this method rather than transforming and warping a copy of the wall or window to make it look fitting to the natural vanishing point in the photo. The result using the vanishing point was satisfactory and could have used some patching up to make the lines of the panels on the wall fit exactly but i feel that my result demonstrated how to put the vanishing point filter to good use quickly.

The fourth exercise was a simple correction of the lens distortion on a photo of some columns. This was fixed using the ‘Lens Correction’ filter , surprisingly. After changing a few settings in the dialog box the resulting image looked normal by comparison.

The last exercise merged two layers with different focuses, using auto- align layers, to create an image with both foreground and background in focus with a little added vibrance to make the image pop.

After completing all the changes to the images above I created a PDF presentation with a watermark and dissolve transition to better display my work.
