Topology

Image

Topology is the art of creating clean edges in 3D modelling that will compliment the model rather than making it stretched or polygons clumped together. With good topology the edges of polygons will fall on natural creases/movement in the model. Below is a good example of how aligning edges to movement or changes in depth of the model makes a great difference.

ImageTopology works around the laws of density:

  • Curvature requires density
  • Motion requires density
  • Density requires uniformity

The main goal of topology is to reduce redundancy

Subdivision has no relation to the 3D model.

Topology is based directly on the models properties and desired behavior.
