This workshop was to create a water & laser show synchronised to music. To begin with I created the container for the water. I had decided to create a contained pool of water with several different height water fountains. I created a plane to represent a water level within the container. I created a material made up of an env ball with 2 inputs (a fractal mixed with a sky image) this created a wavy looking reflection of the sky above on the surface of the water. I then applied a fractal bump map to the plane to add depth of ripples. I then made this material slightly transparent to better represent water.
After placing metal fountain bases and the plane within the contain it was looking like this:
I added 3 emitters that I would later ‘duplicate special’ (maintaining inputs) to easily create 3 different rows of water fountains with different key frame animation. I also added gravity to the particles so that the water would fall down the same as real life. I set the particle render type to cloud (s/w) so that it looked more like water spray and was able to be rendered using mental ray.
Another issue I encountered was rendering the colour of my lasers in mental ray. To achieve this I had to use a particlesamplerinfo node linking the colour from the ramp to a simple lambert material.
I added a glow to the lambert and linked the ramp to the input of the incandescence to maintain colour whilst being illuminated by itself.
Here is the finished product:
